Dubai in summer is a city of extremes.
Temperatures climbing above 42°C. Humidity levels that feel like a warm wall the moment you step outside. A golden haze over the skyline that looks almost cinematic — and in the early morning, a soft, honey-toned light that no studio can replicate.
Summer in Dubai is not the end of great outdoor photography. It is the beginning of a different kind — one that requires planning, the right timing, and a photographer who knows the city well enough to work with its conditions rather than against them.
Whether you’re booking a couple’s shoot, a family session, a maternity shoot, or personal portraits, this guide covers everything you need to know to get beautiful, safe, and comfortable photos during Dubai’s hottest months.

ToggleThe Golden Rule: Shoot Early Morning or Evening
This is the single most important thing to understand about summer photography in Dubai.
The midday window — roughly 10am to 5pm — is not workable for outdoor shoots. The combination of intense overhead light, heat haze, and temperatures exceeding 40°C makes it uncomfortable for clients, harsh for skin tones, and technically unflattering for photography. Shadows are flat, colours are blown, and everyone is squinting.
Early Morning: 5:30am to 8:00am
This is the best time to shoot in Dubai during summer, full stop.
The light at this hour is extraordinary — soft, directional, and warm. The sky transitions from deep blue to amber and gold, and the air is at its coolest (still warm, but bearable). The city is quiet. Beaches are empty. Locations that are impossible to use during tourist hours become peaceful, private backdrops.
For couples, maternity sessions, and family portraits, early morning shoots produce some of the most beautiful results of the year. The light is flattering from any angle, and the relaxed, unhurried atmosphere translates directly into natural, candid expressions.
The trade-off is the early alarm. But for clients who make the effort, the images are consistently worth it.
Sunrise in Dubai during summer (June–September): approximately 5:30am to 6:00am.
Plan to start shooting within 15–20 minutes of sunrise to catch the best light.
Golden Hour Evening: 6:00pm to 8:00pm
The evening golden hour is the more popular option for clients who can’t commit to a predawn start.
As the sun drops toward the horizon, the harsh overhead light softens into warm, low, directional rays. Colours become richer. Shadows lengthen and add depth. The Dubai skyline catches the last light of the day in a way that looks almost impossibly beautiful against clear summer skies.
Evening sessions in summer typically run from around 6:30pm to 7:45pm, with the best light concentrated in the final 30–45 minutes before sunset.
Sunset in Dubai during summer (June–September): approximately 7:00pm to 7:30pm.
Note that while the evening is cooler than midday, summer evenings in Dubai are still warm — typically 35–38°C at sunset. Lightweight, breathable outfits and shaded locations for breaks between shots make a significant difference to client comfort.
Best Outdoor Locations for Summer Shoots in Dubai
Choosing the right location matters more in summer than any other time of year. The ideal spot has a combination of open sky for golden light, natural shade nearby, and easy access to an air-conditioned space.
JBR Beach (early morning): At 5:45am, JBR is nearly empty and the light over the water is extraordinary. The sand reflects warm tones beautifully and the open horizon gives a sense of space.
Downtown Dubai and Burj Khalifa (early morning): The fountains and architecture catch the first light of the day in a way that mid-morning crowds make impossible. Early morning is the only practical time for this location in summer.
Al Fahidi Historical District: The narrow lanes and high walls provide natural shade, making this one of the few locations that works slightly later in the morning (before 9am). The warm tones of the wind towers and traditional architecture suit both portraits and couple sessions beautifully.
Dubai Creek: The dhow-lined waterfront and traditional Abra crossing points create a timeless, atmospheric backdrop. Best before 8am in summer.
Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve and Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (desert locations): The desert is stunning at golden hour. Evening is preferable to morning for desert shoots — by 6:30pm the sand has cooled slightly and the light across the dunes is dramatic.
Hotel and resort settings (pools, gardens, lobbies): For clients who want a comfortable, climate-controlled option, Dubai’s luxury hotel environments offer beautiful architectural settings without outdoor heat exposure. Indoor shoots at any time of day work well in summer.
Essential Summer Photoshoot Precautions
A great photographer in Dubai during summer isn’t just skilled with a camera — they’re skilled at managing the comfort and safety of clients in challenging conditions. Here’s what to prepare and expect.
Hydration is non-negotiable
Bring water. Bring more water than you think you need. Even at 6am, Dubai summer air is warm and humid. Dehydration sets in faster than most people realise, and it shows in photos — tired eyes, flushed skin, a general flatness in expression that even great editing can’t fully fix.
At Zest Photography, we bring water to every summer session and build in short shaded breaks during longer shoots.
Dress smart — light fabrics and breathable fits
Tight, heavy, or dark-coloured clothing absorbs heat and accelerates discomfort. For summer shoots, we recommend:
- Light, breathable fabrics: linen, cotton, and loose-knit materials
- Light or neutral colours: white, cream, pastels, and soft tones photograph beautifully ingolden light and reflect heat rather than absorbing it
- Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat and show sweat
- For children: dress them as lightly as possible — overheated children are uncomfortablechildren, and that comes through in every frame.
If you’re unsure what to wear, ask your photographer for advice before the shoot day. It’s one of
the most overlooked factors in getting great summer photos.
Skin prep matters more in summer
Summer humidity in Dubai means sweat is inevitable.A few things that make a significant difference to how you look on camera:
- Apply a lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen at least 30 minutes before the shoot.
- Use mattifying primer or setting powder to reduce shine.
- Bring a compact powder or blotting papers for touch-ups between shots.
- For hair, choose styles that hold in humidity — loose, flowing styles look great but can become difficult to manage in warm, humid conditions.
Protect your skin — and your children’s
Even at 6am, UV levels in Dubai can be significant in summer. Apply SPF before heading out. For children and babies, bring a hat and shade as backup. For maternity sessions, comfort is especially important — we always plan the shoot timeline to ensure expectant mothers are never standing in direct sunlight for extended periods.
Arrive on time — golden light doesn’t wait
The golden light window in summer is narrow. At sunrise, you typically have 20–30 minutes of the best light before it starts to climb and harden. Arriving even 10 minutes late to a sunrise session can mean missing the most beautiful part of the shoot.
We send clients a detailed brief the day before every summer session — including exact meeting time, location pin, parking information, and what to expect.
Camera equipment needs care too
Dubai summer conditions are challenging for camera equipment as well as people. Heat can affect battery performance and lens performance. Moving from an air-conditioned car into humid outdoor air causes lens fogging (condensation on glass) that takes 5–10 minutes to clear.
At Zest Photography, we plan for this: lenses are allowed to acclimatise before shooting starts, equipment is stored in protective bags between locations, and we always carry backup batteries charged and ready.
Indoor Summer Shoots: A Great Alternative
For clients who prefer a more comfortable experience without the early morning or evening scheduling commitment, Dubai offers outstanding indoor shoot environments that work beautifully year-round.
Studio shoots: Clean, controlled lighting and fully climate-controlled comfort. Ideal for newborn photography, product shoots, and professional headshots.
Luxury hotel interiors: Lobby architecture, ornate details, pools, and restaurant spaces. Many of Dubai’s hotels are visually extraordinary and make stunning backdrops for couple and family sessions.
Café and restaurant settings: For lifestyle-style portraits, Dubai’s beautifully designed café spaces offer intimate, photogenic settings with no heat exposure.
Home sessions: Newborn and family lifestyle shoots in the client’s own home — natural window light, personal environment, maximum comfort for babies and young children.
What to Tell Your Children (and Yourself) Before a Summer Shoot
The most important thing about summer photography in Dubai is mindset. Clients who arrive expecting a relaxed, comfortable, breezy outdoor session like they’ve seen on Instagram in November will be surprised by the warmth — and that surprise shows up in photos.
Brief everyone in your group before the shoot:
- It will be warm — dress light, stay hydrated
- The session is short (most golden-hour sessions are 60–90 minutes maximum)
- The light at this hour is unlike any other time of year The slightly flushed, sun-kissed glow of an early morning Dubai summer session looks absolutely beautiful in the final images
- The clients who embrace summer shoots almost always end up with some of their favourite photos of the year.
The light is uniquely warm and flattering, the locations are quieter, and there’s something genuinely beautiful about capturing Dubai when the city is waking up and the sky is on fire.
